As we're all preparing, decorating and getting the candy ready for Halloween, we can't forget our dogs. It's important to remember several things and not just their treats!
*If they don't like dressing up, don't force it! Sometimes putting costumes, hats, etc., creates needless anxiety for our dogs. No need for that when we just want them to be happy and have fun!
*Keep all holiday candy out of dogs' reach! Several years ago, I had a dog that never jumped up on tables, counters, etc., and never went for things sitting out. But, when there was a bowl of candy on the coffee table, it disappeared quickly. A trip to the vet and hundreds of dollars later, thankfully, he was okay, but it's much better to be proactive and prevent it from happening (my lesson learned!). And, if your dog is going trick-or-treating on a leash with you and your kids, take note of any dropped candy in the street, on sidewalks or in yards that the dog (or someone else's) could gobble up...pick it up and remove the danger. So many problems can come from dogs eating things they shouldn't.
*Remember on Oct. 31st, there will be lots of doorbell ringing, opening the door, etc., for trick-or-treaters and let's keep our dogs in mind when that is happening. If your dog typically gets worked up when those things happen, make sure to put them in a comfortable setting before the action begins! And, if you have a dog who loves to go outside whenever the door is open, take great care to ensure they do not get out while you're handing out candy!
What a fun holiday and our pets can enjoy it with us, too, as long as we keep in mind things that will keep them safe, happy and comfortable.
It's not too late to order some Halloween cookies for your dog(s) and take part in our "Howl"-oween Facebook photo contest!
